Hello, my name is P. I am the initiator of all this, captain of this voyage, author number one. In the world of long form (series) storytelling you might call me „the show runner“. To get one thing straight right away: I am a total loser. If you have any problem with that you should stop reading immediately and do something else. But here comes the good part: I’ve been loosing forward. Always. And after four decades of doing this I have a technique. You hardly see me fall. In the next blink of an eye I am standing upright again, ready for the next crazy idea. But what about the others? This epic journey with all these tiny puzzle pieces and squiggly storylines has so many players that it makes my head spin. But you and I must be patient. We will meet them all. One you are already familiar with — yourself.

Hallo, mein Name ist P. Ich bin der Initiator von alledem hier, Kapitän dieser Reise, Autor Nummer Eins. In der Welt der langen Serien-Erzählungen würde man mich den „Show Runner“ nennen. Eines gleich vorneweg: Ich bin ein Verlierer. Wer damit ein Problem hat, sollte besser nicht weiterlesen und gleich etwas anderes machen. Aber es gibt da einen Silberstreif: Ich bin vorwärtsgescheitert. Immer. Und in vier Jahrzehnten habe ich meine Technik derart verfeinert, dass Du mich nicht mehr fallen siehst. Beim nächsten Lidschlag stehe ich wieder aufrecht, bereit für die nächste verrückte Idee. So viel zu mir. Schauen wir mal, was die anderen machen. Diese epische Reise mit all ihren winzigen Puzzlestücken und verwundenen Storylines hat so viele Akteuere, dass einem schlecht werden kann. Wer erwartet uns da? Wir werden sie alle kennenlernen. Mit einem bist Du aber schon gut vertraut — dir selbst.

The muses don’t just come in and do their magic, whistle a melody, murmur the exact phrase you’ve been looking for, sketch the solution for a problem. No, no. You need to show them _first that you _really mean it. They check out wether your shop is open every day at the exact hours you put on the sign up front. Then they pay you a visit, stroll around, want you sitting behind the counter not pushing them into buying stuff they don’t need. But whatever you do in your little shop or out in the field — they ask the question: Is she serious? Is he putting his ass on the line? They want you to go on stage or up in the air, exposing yourself. They want you to fly the plane and have your instructor yell at you through a now distorted intercom that you’ve just made the exact same mistake at the exact same critical moment as last time. They want you to make the phone call and be humiliated by some inflated a-hole. They don’t want you to be reckless, but they do want you to go „all in“. Did you ever ask yourself why there is a Sunday? Most Muses give you one day off and that’s it! They’re not mean or anything and they’re far from being uptight. They just know what it takes.
Homer called upon them in the opening lines of his Odyssey „O divine Poesy, goddess-daughter of Zeus, sustain for me this song“ (..) „make this tale live for us in all its many bearings, O Muse.“ as translated by T.E. Lawrence and reiterated ad infinitum by Steven Pressfield among many others, for which I am very grateful.
For this endeavor here I might need all nine of them to be on board. Kalliope for the narration, Klio to get all the historical dots lined up like a string of pearls, Erato to get a lot of looooove into all of this, Euterpe for the Songs you’re about to hear, Melpomene for the suspense so that nobody falls asleep, Polyhymnaia for the right spirit(s), Terpsichore .. who knows, there might be some dancing too, maybe after an engineering breakthrough, zero-e, and last but not least: Thalia to throw in a little joke here and there and Urania for the celestial navigation. Remember we are traveling in a yellow plane, not in a ship at sea, but the earth is still rotating under us.

Sie wollen, dass Du auf die Bühne gehst oder das hoch in die Luft, sie wollen, dass Du dich exponierst. Sie wollen, dass Du das Flugzeug fliegst und dass Dein Fluglehrer dich durch eine jetzt auf einmal verzerrte Intercom anraunzt dass Du genau den gleichen Fehler gemacht hast in genau der gleichen kritischen Situation wie letztes Mal. Sie wollen, dass Du den Anruf tätigst und von einem aufgeblasenen Arsch erniedrigt wirst. Sie wollen nicht, dass Du leichtsinnig handelst aber, dass Du alles gibst. Hast Du dich je gefragt, warum es einen Sonntag gibt? Die Musen geben Dir einen Tag frei und das war’s! Sie meinen es nicht böse und sie sind auch nicht verkrampft, sie wissen einfach nur, was es braucht.

I got to know all the sirens, cyclops, cannibals, monsters, adverse winds .. but although I did it in my mind for so many hours, I never actually moved any object (with me in it) in three dimensional space .. in other words: flown a plane myself. I watched how other did it but sitting in the left seat in a very small plane for the first time was scary to say the least .. and exiting of course. And I wanted to capture this process and I officially declare now that I am on a Odyssey through the air. I learn to fly a paraglider, a hang-glider (that should be called a „Dragon“ in English too — in Germany the term „Drachen“ is well known since good old Siegfried and Isolde days) and the Private Pilot Livence — the foundation for all powered flight and passenger travel. A Delta ist better!

When I actually got out .. things weren’t easier .. ThenI had to deal with all the sirens, cyclops, cannibals, monsters, adverse winds ..you name it .. the whole shebang .. but the REAL odyssey one through the air! // the aerial one has just begun .. .. A reminder to kick useless phrases in the ass + How a phrase lives for 100 years now + I put this quote in the beginning of this tale to remind me not to keep useless ideas and phrases in this narration. We all want to keep our darlings in written form, photographed, shot in film, recorded in sound. We might want to keep them because it feels good, because we love the idea and ignore the fact that it might not fit in. The reasons to keep them are ample. If it does not propels the story forward in some way — kill it! (SNIF). Qiller-Couch’s quote was made famous in 2000 by Steven Kings book „On Writing“ .. and EDT it might be particular important here because this is a „live narration“ in a blog .. it does not have to be perfect in the EDT first draft .. but
